The basement is a floor of a building which is completely and partially under the ground. A building can have one or more basements at a time. In the past they were being called cellars. They generally work as the utility store for building where systems like boiler, breaker panel, car park, water heater or fuse box get installed and can be found, also many other facilities such as electric power distribution system or cable distribution system can be located. In many big countries with higher price of living these are being used for residential part of the building too and are being considered higher standard of the living.

The world is being used for the underground floors of stores and other business establishments but for houses this word get used only when these floors have their own path of entrance and okay to live in with window. The word cellar was being used for the whole underground floor and there were also sub cellars which were a floor below cellars.

Basement can be used for same purpose as the other floors of the house can be used for. There are other matters that can specify its use in different areas such as geography of the area in which house is located, the soil, activities, building technology, seismic, climate and the real estate economy of the location.

There are many areas in which basements cannot be made or used for living because of flood issue or wet climate in small houses but they can be used in big ones. In countries with continental climate these are being considered as the standard of living.

There are many types of basements.

A house which has been situated on a slope will have a daylight or walk-out basement and it will be above the ground with its own way to enter and exit. Some of these types of home look like one storey house from the street because their basements will be hidden. People can come out of them without using stairs.  To brighten them up large size windows can be used and can be used as the exit of rooms. They can be used for many reasons such as for garage, or maintenance room or living areas.

The walls of a look-out basement will be higher than the ground and the window will also be above the level ground. The site is very less sloppy and a person can come out without any difficulty.

A walk-up basement is one which has an exit way through a stairwell. In many designs these stairs will be hidden with the help of angles basement doors so that the water of the rain does not enter it.

The wine cellar is a room designed to store wine in the ground of the house, in the past people were used to store wine in cellars to keep them chilled for drinking because there were no fridge at that time.
